Aurora offers reward for speed sign theft info

Even if you don't know your speed, you can earn $500 by helping Aurora Police Department recover its stolen speed sign.

Posted on Pleasant View, the sign was there Friday, July 6, and early Saturday, July 7, said APD Chief Bryan Fields. The city is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the sign's return and conviction of the thief or thieves.

“This thing was such a positive thing. … All the residents of Pleasant View just loved seeing it up there,” said Fields. So did residents of Manchester Street and Ridge Avenue where it previously was placed.

“The victim here is the citizens,” said Fields. So many residents have requested the sign be put in their neighborhoods, that the police department had a one-month waiting list.

It has helped greatly with traffic enforcement, he said, explaining records kept by the device have shown speeds dropping wherever it's been placed.

“We're just so swamped with criminal complaints … our traffic enforcement has somewhat slowed,” said Fields. And with the speed sign's loss, “now we're back to square one.”

“... I'm really angry over this and the citizens are angry,” he added.

Anyone with information about the sign's theft or its current location is asked to call APD at 812-926-1101.
