Vandals strike LHS football field

While white lines and numbers on a football field are a common sight, the lines making a drawing and words on the field were not common - in written form anyway - on a football field.

Lawrenceburg Police are investigating spray painted obscenities at Lawrenceburg High School football field. The white graffiti was discovered Wednesday morning, July 25.

Besides the obscenities, one of which was misspelled, the initials “EC” and “SD” were painted on the field as well.

Police are offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the vandals. Anyone with information can call investigating officer Brian Potts at LPD, 1-812-537-2284.

LHS Athletic Director Joe Vogelgesang said a few passers by noticed the defaced field, and there were several messages and phone calls to the school about it.

A school employee called him and Lawrenceburg Schools’ Superintendent Karl Galey, he said.

Although new to the AD job, he’s seen smaller vandalism inside and outside the school. “But I don’t remember anything that visible,” said Vogelgesang, who has been at LHS for 14 years and was head baseball coach for 11.

The new sod was installed in May, and the coaching and maintenance staffs were letting the grass grow longer than it normally is for play, he said.

Maintenance staff were covering up the white vandals paint with green paint Wednesday morning, and “hopefully it won’t kill those spots. What’s upsetting is the school corporation spent money to put the sod down and get the field in shape,” said Vogelgesang.

It will take a few cuts before the graffiti is gone, but it should be gone before the Tigers’ first home game Friday, Aug. 24.

While he doesn’t remember anything similar happening in Lawrenceburg, an incident with weed killer happened in 2003 when LHS, on a run to the state finals, team played Decatur Central School.

“Their infield was vandalized and they were covering up the bare spots with green paint,” said Vogelgesang.
