1953 – Following a 1-0 loss to the Senators in Washington, White Sox second baseman Nellie Fox is injured in a freak accident in the Griffith Field locker room. Fox reaches for toothpaste when a row of four lockers tips over on him. Pinned for several minutes, Nellie's legs above the ankles take the brunt of the impact, causing a cut to his left leg. Fox sits out the next two games, the only two he misses all year. Exactly how many lockers tipped over remains in dispute, but many blame first baseman Ferris Fain for shoving them from the other side in anger over his dwindling batting average. Later that same evening, Fain breaks his hand in a fight with a night club patron in a Maryland suburb, causing him to miss four weeks. From June, 1952 through September, 1960, Fox will appear in 1,316 of the 1,319 White Sox games.
Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield, born 1966. Twins outfielder Bombo Rivera, born 1952.
