Andrew J. Gress, 23, died early Saturday, Nov. 11, when his car crashed into a concrete culvert, according to a Dearborn County Sheriff's Department news release.
“We don't know whether he fell asleep of swerved to miss a deer,” said Dearborn County Coroner Wes Holt, who pronounced Gress dead at the scene, not far from Lake Dildear.
Gress, 5504 E. County Road 300 South, Dillsboro, was driving east on U.S. 50 at 3:30 a.m. when his car went into the grass median and struck the culvert near the Ripley County line, said the release. Holt said the car flew 90 feet through the air and landed on its top.
Gress was not wearing a seat belt, said Holt. Preliminary cause of death is blunt force trauma, but toxicology reports won't be back for eight to 10 days, he said. There was no evidence of alcohol use at the scene, added Holt.
“He lit up a room. He always had a smile on his face, he made everybody laugh. He was a great guy,” said Gress' sister Jessica Burkett, Versailles.
“He never had an enemy,” said his mother Pamela Gress. She and his father Andy Gress live in Dillsboro.
The younger Andrew Gress worked two jobs, for UPS in the evening and at MS & J, Sunman, during the daytime, she said. He enjoyed fishing and wrestling.
“He was a wonderful young man,” she added.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home, Milan.
