ST. LEON – East Central head coach David Disbro, 195-94 entering his 14th season – which starts Saturday night at Jennings County – is a proven winner.
Hang around the coaching business long enough, however, and the law of averages may well catch up.
That’s the best way to explain the Trojans’ 8-15 slide last year, which hit the skids when all-time rebounding and shot-blocking leader Logan Jaehnen went down with a season-ending knee injury Dec. 29.
Even though EC’s lineup still was senior-dominated after losing the 6’6” big man – voted conference MVP in absentia by rival coaches – the rest were mainly 5’10” guard types, struggling to compete against a talent-packed league and the typical loaded Class 4A sectional.
It would be nice to report that East Central – with its only prior losing season under Disbro the 10-12 slate of 2006-06 – can expect a major bounceback year.
But brace yourselves, Trojan basketball fans. The ride may get a whole lot bumpier before things start evening out again.
