Journal, Register staff win awards for writing, photos, website

“Hard” news, features, sports, photos and special sections all brought in awards for the staff of The Journal-Press and The Dearborn County Register.

First place awards:
Flood: 1937 & Beyond, The Dearborn County Register, for best special section, with judges’ comments “Local. Interesting. Creative. Great Job!;”
Porcupine Boat, The Dearborn County Register, for best feature photo by Bob Mattingly, with judges’ comments “This is a graphically strong and surreal photo that is also technically strong.”
Elbert “Bud” Kinnett 1930-2012 - Final Call, The Journal-Press, for best short feature story by Erika Schmidt Russell, with judges’ comments “ Poignant story honoring one of nation’s finest! Great use of the story to show his bravery rather than simply telling it. Good use of quotes and good introduction and conclusion tying it all together.”

Second place awards:
www.thedcregister.com, The Dearborn County Register, best website, judges’ comments “Good arrangement of news; in-article hyperlinking is well-done.”
Who is behind the crock of ... ousting Crocker?, S-D calendar survey more failure than fair, Walk the walk - not just talk on open gov’t, The Journal-Press, for best editorial writer for Chandra L. Mattingly and Erika Schmidt Russell, with judges’ comments “Three well-written editorials on local topics should make an impact on readers. Good job.”
Principal connection, The Dearborn County Register, for best in-depth feature by Erika Schmidt-Russell, with judges’ comments “Great topic about two wonderful women working together to improve the schools in both of their countries. Writer conveys that well by taking the reader on the tour with them.”
Ghost, The Dearborn County Register, best feature photo by Bob Mattingly, with judges’ comments “This graphic photo juxtaposes unlikely elements to good effect.”
Sports section, The Dearborn County Register, Jim Buchberger, with judges’ comments “Good coverage.”
Lawrenceburg Convention-Event Center; Aurora Greendale Lawrenceburg election; Senate looks at dumping recycling tax, The Dearborn County Register, best use of graphics by Erika Schmidt Russell, with judges’ comments “Also a great entry for graphics, but they’re a little busier than first-place entry. Sometimes less is more.”

Third place awards:
Supreme Court cases consideration in Conley appeal, The Dearborn County Register, best news coverage with no deadline pressure by Chandra L. Mattingly, with judges’ comments “ Reporter gives a balanced look at the problems with this case. Good job of writing and getting all sides of the discussion.”
Be beautiful, The Dearborn County Register, best short feature story by Denise Freitag Burdette, with judges’ comments “Great topic - important to all young women! The writer did an excellent job of bringing a national topic to a local level! Great examples!”
50 marathons in 50 states; A wink from the Bambino; Second time around, The Dearborn County Register, best sports commentary by Jim Buchberger, no judges’ comments given.

Congratulations on winning so many awards!

I was covering for Lydia Morath last year, and I remember the "Porcupine Boat" photo that Bob Mattingly Emailed to the graphics department. I thought that this was such a wonderful photo, and I loved working on it in Photoshop to create the perfect finished image.
