James Alex Hughes, age 62, of Dillsboro, passed away unexpectedly Sunday afternoon, Dec. 9, 2012. He was born July 15, 1950, in Whitlatch Clinic and Hospital in Milan, Ind.
He was raised at “The Brick” on Laughery Creek by his parents James H. “Trig” Hughes and Mary (Smith) Hughes.
Jim graduated from Dillsboro High School with the class of 1968, and attended Indiana State University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in education. He continued his education at Indiana University in Bloomington, earning a master’s degree in education. He taught at Manchester Elementary School and later transferred to Dillsboro Elementary School where he spent a majority of his teaching career as a math teacher and assistant principal.
When the corporation built a new middle school, Jim finished his carrer as a seventh and eighth grade math teacher. For 30 plus years in the South Dearborn Community Schools, he touched a number of students’ lives both as a teacher and a driving instructor.
In 2001, he was married to Linda Schleicher. He enjoyed golfing, boating, fishing, cooking, spending time with his grandsons and raising his own garden. In 2010, Jim was elected Dearborn County councilman. He was a member of Sons of American Legion, Post 292 and the Aurora Eagles, Post 2022. He was a member of the Bear Creek Baptist Church in Friendship.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, James H. “Trig” Hughes. He is survived by his mother, Mary Lou Hughes; loving wife, Linda; one son, James Edward Hughes, and his wife, JoAnna, of Dillsboro; one daughter, Katherine Marie Hughes, of Elkhart, Ind.; two grandchildren, James Joseph Hughes and Noah Alexander Diaz De Leon; one stepdaughter, Hannah Schleicher, of Sunman; three brothers, David (Letha) Hughes, of Dillsboro, Timothy (Donna) Hughes, of California, and Jeff (Jennifer) Hughes, of Hidden Valley Lake; Jim’s first wife, Carol Hughes, Dillsboro; several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews and many, many friends.
Friends may meet his family Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at Dillsboro Elementary School from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Dillsboro Elementary School. Pastor Tom Holt will be officiating, and the interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery in Dillsboro.
The family suggests memorials be made to the James Alex Hughes Technology Fund. Arrangements are entrusted to DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro.
