Wise Acres Market & Cafe is more than Aurora's newest food source.
“It's a combination of personal needs and probably an extension of my tendency to feed the people that I love,” said owner Missy Vaterlaus. The Oregon native opened the store at 339 Second St. Saturday, Nov. 24, in what she calls a “soft” opening.
So while the cafe is open and the market shelves are stocked, most of the bulk food is yet to come.
Vaterlaus, 47, and her family have lived in Aurora seven years. But she grew up in the “food co-op mecca” of the Willamette Valley, Oregon, she said. So she was accustomed to having bulk food available.“We've done all sorts of different things – we've lived all over,” she said. But as she and her family traveled to places including Florida, North Carolina and even Russia, she found it difficult to get the quantities of bulk food she wanted “without having a lot of packaging between me and the product,” she said.
