Trivia

Q:  Interim coach Bruce Arians has led the Indianapolis Colts to a 9-3 record and AFC wild card berth, after a 1-2 start, subbing during head coach Chuck Pagano's cancer treatment. Name the last NFL interim coach with a better winning percentage.

A: Taking over the defending NFL champion Los Angeles Rams after head coach Joe Stydahar, with whom he'd feuded, resigned after one game in the 1952 season, Hampton Pool posted a 9-2 mark, tying for the National Conference title before losing a playoff to Detroit, 31-21. Lions went on to beat the Browns in the title game, 17-7.

Today in …

1988 – In the 54th Orange Bowl, a.k.a. “The Game of the Century,” the No. 2-ranked hometown Miami (Fla.) Hurricanes (11-0) beat No. 1-ranked Oklahoma (11-0) by a score of 20-14 to win the national college football Division I championship. With the Canes having given Oklahoma its only losses in both the 1985 and 1986 seasons, the animosity between head coaches -  Miami's Jimmy Johnson and the Sooners' Barry Switzer – is at a fever pitch. Miami QB Steve Walsh hits flanker Michael Irvin for a 23-yard touchdown that caps the Hurricanes' 10 unanswered points in the third quarter for the 20-7 lead. Miami defense, led by Orange Bowl MVP Bernard (Tiger) Clark (14 tackles, 12 solo), starting in place of suspended MLB George Mira Jr., holds the Sooners to 255 yards total offense. Ironically, both Johnson and Switzer will later become head coaches of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys, where both will win Super Bowl championships.
