Q: The Baseball Writers Association of America failed to elect a modern candidate to the Hall of Fame last week for the only the third time since 1971. Name the top vote-getters in those last two non-elective years.
A: Falling short of the required 75 percent of BBWAA votes were Yogi Berra (67 percent) in 1971 and Phil Niekro (68 percent) in 1996. Both were elected in the following years.

1994 – San Francisco 49ers runningback Ricky Watters scores an NFL postseason record five touchdowns in a 44-3 thrashing of the New York Giants in a divisional playoff game at Candlestick Park. Watters crosses the goal on a run of one yard in the first quarter, plunges of one and two yards in the second period, and six and two yards in the third. He is the first player to score more than three TDs in an NFL playoff game. During the rout of the Giants, Watters gains a total of 118 yards on 24 carries and catches five passes for another 46 yards.
