Are you ready to relay?

All right, so it's not quite June yet. But the kickoff for the Dearborn and Ohio Counties Relay for Life is this Saturday, Jan. 19, nonetheless.

The American Cancer Society relay kickoff will begin at 10 a.m. as event volunteers and participants gather at the Dearborn & Ohio Rooms in Dearborn County Hospital, 600 Wilson Creek Road, Lawrenceburg, said volunteer promotions chairperson Jan Tyler.

They will launch their fund-raising efforts for the relay for 2013, she said. All interested individuals are invited and encouraged to attend the kick-off event.

“Although the Relay For Life of Dearborn & Ohio Counties is more than five months away, now is the time to get involved,” said Kathy Toburen, American Cancer Society community representative.

“One in every 100 Americans participates in this fund-raising event that has become a global phenomenon.

Residents are invited to attend the kickoff celebration to learn more about the upcoming event and how they can become part of an exciting overnight event that will pave the way to a world with less cancer and more birthdays,” she said.

Anyone considering being a team captain, team participant or corporate sponsor is invited to attend. Also invited are all cancer survivors and caregivers, said Tyler.

“This is a great opportunity to celebrate or honor someone who has battled cancer and to give back to the community,” she said. There are many volunteer opportunities associated with Relay For Life. Attend the kick-off event and find out the details, she suggested.

Relay For Life participants and visitors have a chance to celebrate the victory of local cancer survivors during the survivors lap; remember those who are fighting cancer or those have lost their battle to the disease during the luminaria ceremony; and participate in the fight back ceremony, which gives everyone a chance to proclaim his or her own way of taking action against the disease, said Tyler, a cancer survivor.

Donations can be made to this local Relay For Life event by visiting RelayForLife.org. Community members also can start or join a team by following the links to their local Relay event.

The 2013 Relay For Life of Dearborn & Ohio Counties will be Saturday, June 22, through Sunday, June 23, beginning at 9 a.m. at South Dearborn High School track west of Aurora off Ind. 350.
