A benefit for Gerri Martin, 74, Dillsboro, to help with cancer-related medical expenses will be 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Feb. 8, at Rockie's Bar & Grill, 301 Industrial Drive, Rising Sun.

Kindred Spirit, Faze 3, and Monkeybone will perform from 8 p.m. to midnight, and there will be a raffle and silent auction. Food and beverages will be available.

Meanwhile, Skyline Chili, Lawrenceburg, will hold a dine and donate fund raiser Wednesday, Jan. 30. Skyline will donate 10 percent of its sales from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., in addition to letting Martin's friends sell baked goods to raise additional funds.

Martin, who worked the slots at Rising Star Casino from its inception as Grand Victoria Casino until her diagnosis of Stage 4 oral cancer in October, will lose her insurance benefits Feb. 1. She was a carhop and waitress at Frisch's Restaurant from 1967 to 1996.

“She thought it was her teeth and then her jaw kind of puffed out a little,” like an abscess, said Martin's daughter Sue Martin. But the dentist said it was not her teeth.

Gerri Martin raised five children while working full time. Originally from Cleves, she's lived in Dillsboro since the 1960s.

“She is a sweet lady who is very funny,” said friend Chris Becker, Ohio County. “I honestly don't think she has ever met a stranger.”

Martin came to work at the casino in August 1986, and is “very loved” by her co-workers, family and friends, said Becker, a Rising Star Casino employee. Casino visitors “truly love talking to Gerri and listening to her funny stories.”

She has four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Sue Martin, Becker and other friends are raising money to help Gerri Martin with medical-related expenses and show their support, said Becker. Martin's tube feeding alone costs over $2,000 a month, said her daughter.

The benefit Feb. 8 will offer terrific prizes donated by Long Horns, Out Back, Logan's, Skyline, Wal-Mart, El Marichi, Zorbas, Bob on the Levee, IGA, Anytime Fitness, Comb's Pizza, Visible Changes, Personally Yours, Domino's, Golden Rule, said Becker.

Also, from Rising Star Casino, Lydia's Earthly Designs, Mary Kay consultant Missi Richards, Home Furniture, Advanced Auto, Neaman Floral, Juanita Taylor, Doug Hudson, M & M Tanning, June's Retreat, Bob Sumerel Tire & Service, McDonald's, Hofbrauhaus, Great Clips, Penn Station, Papa John's, KFC, Subway, Neff's Shoes, Snappy Tomato Pizza Rising Sun, Every Day Hair Design and Panama Pete's, plus personalized baskets from Vada Shepard.

Anyone else wanting to donate items or seeking information may call Sue Martin at 812-689-4824 or Becker at 812-584-6820. Folks not able to make the benefit but wanting to help may send checks made out to Gerri Martin to her at P.O. Box 157, Versailles, IN 47042.
