The caption above the photo in the Jan. 4, 1968, Harrison Press, reads: New Mayor Takes Oath Of Office. The photo depicts a 45-year-old Harry “Ham” Rolfes, with a shock of dark hair and big black glasses, being sworn in the first time as Harrison mayor.

Little did anybody know it was the beginning of a dynasty.

Rolfes, a Democrat, who was born and raised in Harrison, first served three consecutive four-year terms. He was the first Harrison mayor to serve a four-year term. Before 1968, Harrison mayors were elected for two years, said Councilman Jim “Scoop” Robertson, who served with Rolfes during his final term.
