Indiana State Excise Police officers seized a distilling apparatus and arrested a Dillsboro man this afternoon after their investigation into a tip about an advertisement on Craigslist.

Excise officers arrested Curtis A. McNutt, Jr., 30, Dillsboro, on a preliminary charge of possession of a still or distilling apparatus for the manufacture of liquor, a misdemeanor.

Officers began their investigation after an anonymous tip about an advertisement posted on Craigslist that offered a distilling apparatus for $150.00. The Feb. 2 Craigslist post listed a “moonshine still” for sale, along with a five gallon bucket, 20 liter pot, copper wiring, air locks and a tester.

Indiana law makes it unlawful for someone to own, have in his possession or under his control, a still or distilling apparatus for the manufacture of liquor.

Anyone with information on the unlawful manufacturing of liquor or unlawful possession of a still or distilling apparatus may contact the local Excise Police district office at: http://www.in.gov/atc/isep/2379.htm.

As the enforcement division of the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission, the primary mission of the Indiana State Excise Police is to promote public safety by enforcing Indiana’s Alcoholic Beverage Code. While excise officers have the authority to enforce any state law, they focus primarily on alcohol, tobacco and related laws.
