COLUMBUS, Ind. – Bloomington North’s Shai Warfield broke the heart of East Central girls basketball with her game-winning point-blank shot in front with 6.4 seconds left Tuesday night.

North’s Cougars (now 9-12) battled back from double-figure deficits in both halves to take only its third lead in the game when it counted most, edging EC 52-51 in Class 4A Sectional 14 first-round action at Columbus East’s Orange Pit.

In hopes of breaking a state tournament first round losing streak that extends back prior to the 2000-01 season, East Central (17-4), coming off its best regular season in school history, seemed destined to run away with it early.
