Picture a curling rink. You know, like in the Winter Olympics, with the brooms and fat guys. Then picture a place like Bemidji, Minn. No, farther south, like Detroit. No, farther south still, like … West Harrison. The Franklin County home of Rick Niklas, a member of the Greater Harrison Rotary Club, may sport the only curling rink for hundreds of miles. Right there in his yard, Niklas and friends have created a 4-inch-thick sheet of ice, complete with homemade curling stones, for friends and family to take on the odd sport often called “chess on ice.” To read the rest of this article please subscribe or sign in |
