Picture a curling rink. You know, like in the Winter Olympics, with the brooms and fat guys. Then picture a place like Bemidji, Minn. No, farther south, like Detroit. No, farther south still, like … West Harrison.

The Franklin County home of Rick Niklas, a member of the Greater Harrison Rotary Club, may sport the only curling rink for hundreds of miles.

Right there in his yard, Niklas and friends have created a 4-inch-thick sheet of ice, complete with homemade curling stones, for friends and family to take on the odd sport often called  “chess on ice.”
