Trivia

Q:  Saturday's 134th running of the Kentucky Derby recalls the event's colorful nicknames, including “The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports” and “The Run For The Roses.” How did the latter term originate?

A: Part of the Derby tradition since 1883, when New York socialite E.Berry Wall presented roses to the ladies at a post-race party, a lush blanket of 564 red roses is awarded to the Kentucky Derby winner each year, presented by the governor of Kentucky.

Today in …

1953 – Native Dancer, undefeated in 11 races, is upset by 25-1 longshot Dark Star in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Dark Star, ridden by Henry Moreno, steers clear of trouble, while 7-10 favorite Native Dancer, under Eric Guerin, is fouled twice. At the finish line, Dark Star edges Native Dancer by a head. The Derby will be the only race that Native Dancer ever loses. The horse will retire to stud in 1954 after winning 21 of his 22 races, including the 1953 Preakness and Belmont Stakes. Voted Eclipse Horse of the Year in 1954, Native Dancer will appear on the May 31 cover of Time magazine.

LAWRENCEBURG – Two-time Lawrenceburg Speedway points champion Joss Moffatt broke a six-year feature race drought Saturday night, marking his first victory since the track configuration was changed to 3/8 mile.

Moffatt, from Columbus, Ind., did it all Saturday in the No. 5J sprint car, winning his heat race, then drawing pole position and finally leading the A-main from green flag to checkers.'

His most serious challenge came from Gary Taylor, of Gatortail, La., in the No. 40 car. Taylor started this and caught Moffatt early, moving around the No. 5J twice.

Trivia

Q:  Central Michigan tackle Eric Fisher was the No. 1 overall pick Thursday in the NFL draft by the Kansas City Chiefs, making him only the third offensive lineman taken at No. 1 overall in the past 20 years. Name those first two No. 1 line picks.

A: Michigan tackle Jake Long was taken No. 1 overall by the Miami Dolphins in 2008. Ohio State tackle Orlando Pace was the No. 1 overall pick by the St. Louis Rams in 1997.

Today in …

1993 – Monica Seles of Yugoslavia, who at 19 is the highest-ranked female tennis player in the world, is attacked during a match in Hamburg, Germany. A product of Nick Bolletieri's tennis academy in Bradenton, Fla., is sitting during a changeover in her Citizen Cup quarterfinal against Magdalena Maleeva when a man wielding a nine-inch knife stabs her in the back. The attacker is Gunter Parche, a deranged fan of Steffi Graf, who claims he stabbed Seles to help Graf retain the No. 1 ranking. Seles has already won singles titles in eight Grand Slam tournaments. She will not return to competitive tennis for two years, winning only one more Grand Slam title.

Birthdays
