Trivia
Q: The San
Francisco Bay area was named to host the 50th Super Bowl in 2016 this
week, at the 49ers' new stadium in Santa Clara, due to open in 2014.
How many times has that area hosted the NFL championship game?
A: The only previous
Super Bowl played in Northern California was Super Bowl XIX on Jan.
20, 1985, at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto, won by the 49ers over the
Miami Dolphins, 38-16.
Today in …
1883 – A
remarkable game is played at Recreation Park in Philadelphia between
a team of men missing all or part of an arm and a squad of men with
one leg. The one-armed men are called the “Snorkys,” while their
opponents take the name “Hoppers.” Of the 18 men participating,
15 lost their limbs in railroad accidents, two in industrial mishaps
and one at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. The Hoppers, at a
distinct disadvantage playing on crutches and peg legs – which
often become stuck in the muddy field – lose 34-11.

Red Stockings
outfielder William (Dummy) Hoy, born 1862. Red Sox pitcher Reggie

GREENSBURG
– South Dearborn softball rolled out its big guns for an 11-1,
five-inning victory over Lawrenceburg to open Class 3A Sectional 29
play Monday.
Ellen
Barrett connected for her ninth home run of the spring, a two-run
blast with Morgan Wolfer aboard and one out in the home half of the
first inning.
Two
batters later, winning pitcher Kooper Vertz drilled her first
round-tripper of the season, a solo shot that mirrored Barrett's
centerfield blast, keying a four-run first inning for the Lady
Knights.

ST.
LEON – Paige McQueen belted her first home run of the season to
salvage East Central's messy 10-9 Class 4A softball sectional
first-round win over Shelbyville in eight innings Monday.
“ Survive
and advance – that's all that matters in the postseason,” said EC
coach Heather Zins, whose 18-8 host Lady Trojans dodged a big-time
bullet thanks to winning pitcher McQueen's high-fly no-doubt shot to
left-centerfield in the top of the eighth.

AURORA
– East Central girls tennis captured its first sectional
championship since 1993 – just the second in school history - with
a 5-0 victory over Milan Saturday.
Dodging
raindrops most of the weekend - with Thursday’s semifinal round
bumped to Friday and Saturday's championship contested only after
parents brought in leaf-blowers to help dry the South Dearborn courts
– EC's title wasn't exactly a sure thing.
