An Indiana 200th birthday bash joins Greendale’s Fourth of July

Happy Birthday Indiana! Greendale is celebrating Indiana’s 200th birthday during the month of July.  What a better way to kick off the celebration than a free showing of “Hoosiers” at the Greendale Park Saturday, July 2. Movie starts at dusk.There will be snacks and drinks. Bring a blanket and lawn chairs.

But that is just the beginning. On Monday, July 4, the 5K Race registration starts at 6:30 a.m. at Greendale Cabin. Race begins at 8 a.m. Then head over to the fishing derby with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. Derby begins at 9 a.m. at Schnebelt’s Pond. The first 200 will receive a free fishing pole, bait and a t-shirt.

Cool off with free admission to the pool form noon to 6 p.m., but do not forget the bike parade starting at Oakey Park. The first 200 to register receive a free t-shirt. Registration begins at 2:30 p.m., the parade begins at 3 p.m.

As dusk falls, the entertainment begins at Greendale Park. The national anthem will be performed, everyone will sing Happy Birthday to Indiana and the fireworks will soon begin.

But keep in mind throughout the day, no golf carts will be permitted when the streets are closed down.        

The celebration continues 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 14, with a chance to visit the new administration building,500 Ridge Ave. Cookies, cake and punch will be served. Free bicentennial treats also will be available.

America in Bloom will be in town July 14 and July 15 judging the city on floral displays, landscaping, urban forestry, environmental efforts and heritage preservation.  

America in Bloom envisions communities across the country as welcoming and vibrant places to live, work and play - benefitting from colorful plants and trees; enjoying clean environments, celebrating heritage; and planting pride through volunteerism.

Resdidents are asked to show their pride by mowing, weeding and maintaining yards and gardens.  Help the city celebrate 2016, it’s 15th year in the America in Bloom program.
