Runners, walkers sought to support adoption 5K
Memorial Day is a time to remember those who have gone before us and sacrificed to make our lives better.
Sometimes that is a soldier and sometimes it is a family member.
For Mary Beth Osowski, it is her mom Lois.
“She was a tough ER nurse and a champion of the unborn. When we were pursuing our third adoption, a 7-year-old girl with many special needs, I looked to her to give me both the medical advice and the fortitude I needed. Sadly, my mother died before she was able to meet our daughter, but I see her daily in my daughter’s determination to overcome,” said Osowski.
There are 17 million children in the world living in foster care or orphanages.
In 2012, after their second adoption, Osowski and her husband Dan recognized the need and began to help other families who are also on this journey.
“We formed Be The One to raise awareness of adoption, and provide funds for families in the process of adding to their families in this way. We have given grants to those adopting domestically and internationally in 12 countries,” said Osowski.
Be The One will be hosting a 5K Run/Walk on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27.
The run, which will be held at Concord Community Church, 196 Concord Road, Patriot, will begin at 9 a.m. with registration starting at 8:15a.m. All funds raised will go toward financial grants for adoptive families.
Registration is $20 until May 24 and $25 the day of the race. The first 50 participants to sign up will receive a unique “Be The One” t-shirt and a flag to commemorate a hero in their lives.
