WWII veteran will receive Quilt of Valor
A Quilt of Valor will be presented to Mary E. Martin Gargano at 2:15 p.m. Sunday, July 16, at the Chateau of Batesville.
Gargano is a World War II WAC (Women’s Army Corps) veteran who was born Nov. 21, 1924 ,in Cincinnati, to Charles and Mary Ellen Martin. She had three sisters: Virginia, Martha and Jeanette.
Everyone is invited to attend and the Patriot Guard Riders, led by Southeastern Indiana PGR Ride Captain, Tim Kieffer, will be there to help with the celebration and they will have several American Flags flying on the property in her honor. Batesville Mayor, Mike Bettice will speak at the event hosted by Shelia Stevenson of the Rivertown Quilters Club and Rising Sun Vietnam Veteran, PG Gentrup.
Gargano entered the U.S. Army in Miami, Fla., and after basic training was sent to medical school training at Hot Springs, Arkansas. She served as a Tech 5 issuing medications, taking care of skin care patients and helping many patients in their time of need. She also had been assigned to issue parts for plane engines and counted, wrapped, greased and accounted for the binned stock parts. She was a very busy WAC (Women’s Army Corps) technician.
Gargano married Anthony Gargano, who was a World War II Navy Gargano veteran, and they had four children: Tony, Pasquale, Mary Rose and Angelina (Angie). There are seven grandchildren: Brad, Beverly, Kenneth, Heather, Maria , Tony (boy) and Toni (girl) along with seven great-grandchildren.
Gargano was recently recognized when she attended the Trinity Christian Church Veterans’ Banquet in May on Pribble Road in Lawrenceburg. Gargano was discharged from the Army Oct. 26, 1945, at Ft. Bragg, N.C., after the war ended.
She was awarded the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Ruptured Duck (honorable discharge pin), World War II Victory Medal and American Campaign Medal.
We want to thank Gargano for being a member of America’s Greatest Generation as a World War II Veteran.
The Quilts of Valor coordinator for our area is Cindy Peace and her assistant is Shelia Stevenson and they help make the quilts along with the Rivertown Quilters Club located in Lawrenceburg.
