Sons of the American Legion raising money for scholarships

Editor:
This past July, the Aurora Sons of the American Legion, for the seventh time, held the Dickie Dowers Memorial Golf Scramble. Would you believe… that in the seven years that this event has been held, that this was the best turnout, with twenty one teams and one of the summer’s greatest days for golf? What a day! 70 degrees for tee off… 90 degrees for the finish. This event is held annually as the Sons’ major fund raiser for scholarships for upcoming South Dearborn seniors.
The event included 18 holes of golf, raffles, contests, giveaways, prizes, and finally a chicken dinner prepared by the Sons. The winning honors of the scramble went to the team of Kenny Shelton, Reed Shelton, Steve Caldwell, and Sherri Caldwell. Congratulations to them and all of the participants of the memorial event.
Last year’s event raised enough funding for four (4) fifteen hundred dollar ($1,500.00), totaling $6,000.00, for the 2019 class. The recipients of these awards were Makenzie Teke, Leah Wright, Megan Shields, and Noah Probst. With the implementing of new programing the Sons have made steady progress in the past eight years, allowing for more scholarships of greater value.
The main source of revenue for the event is sponsorship from area businesses and individuals. Sponsorships were offered in three (3) levels which are: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. These levels represent donations of $50.00, $100.00, and $200.00, respectively, but uncharacteristically, this year brought forth three (3), significant donors. So, for this reason we have introduced a Platinum level. The $1000.00, mark. This brings us to recognizing all these beloved sponsors.
Topping the charts this year at the Platinum level were: Adams Cooling Tower Construction, O.I.N.K. (Ohio, Indiana, and Northern Kentucky Production), and B.S.I. Engineering.
The Gold sponsors this year: American Legion Post 321 – Aurora, Chase Heating and Air, Ken and Sharon Cleeter, DeBra-Kuempel Contractors, Dillsboro BP, Trivaco, Civista Bank, White Castle Bakery - Cincinnati , Aurora Eagles Aerie 2022, Oyler Family Dentistry, The Electrical Connection, City of Aurora, Bucher Trucking, Sons of the American Legion Squadron 235 – Milan, Fast Signs – Florence Ky., Hollywood Casino, and Frank & Bob Linkmeyer.
The Silver sponsors were: the Aurora Class of ’74, Berry’s Body Shop, Booher – Taylor Agencies, Creemer Home Improvements, Edward Jones Investments – Aurora, Edward Jones Investments – Lawrenceburg, Harley of Cochran, Lawrenceburg Eagles Aerie 2018, Whitewater Motors – Milan, Haag Ford, All Star Driving School, Rockies Bar & Grill, Moores Hill Legion, and Hawk Insurance.
Bronze sponsors were: Ashcraft Auto Body, Aurora Tire, Diane Creech, the Cottage Bar, Doug & Jeanne Kinnett, Lawrenceburg Lodge #4 – F&AM, Leisure Pool and Spa, Mark Schmeltzer – CPA, Second Time Around Store, Sons of the American Legion Squadron 292 – Dillsboro, Dave Walston Air Conditioning, Dan Ross, Jeff Pettit, Brad Spaluding, Auxiliary 231 – Aurora, Allen Callaway, and Lohmiller Real Estate.
As always the Sons thank all the sponsors and urge others to patronize and support them whenever possible. These sponsors are taking pride in the future of our youngsters.
Finally, the Sons take this opportunity to offer condolences to the staff of Hoosiers Links Golf Course, Divits, and the family of a very dear friend, in the passing of Dan Peters. Dan was a veteran Marine. Thanks to Hoosier Links Golf Course and their staff and Divits Bar for all they have done for this event through the years. Thanks Dan, you will be greatly missed!
The Sons of the American Legion are a support group (men’s auxiliary) of the American Legion and are bound by the same principles of the parent organization. We thank you all for your support.

Officer

Legion, Squadron 231 – Keith Ross Post, Aurora
