L’burg girls aim for postseason

LAWRENCEBURG - For the first time in five years, Lawrenceburg girls soccer fell short of the IHSAA sectional title in 2017, losing 2-1 in overtime to EIAC rival Batesville in its new Class 2A championship. Five seniors, all of whom had played roles in the Lady Tigers’ rise to statewide soccer prominence - including their run to a 2016 Class A state runner-up finish - graduated in May, leaving some key spots to fill. But 13th LHS head coach Bill Offutt (149-57-27) and company, unaccustomed to abbreviated postseason runs, are itching to get back to testing their luck against the likes of Evansville Memorial or Indianapolis Cathedral. That means advancing to the regional level or beyond, in high school soccer’s second season under the expanded IHSAA three-class state tournament format. “Our sectional isn’t significantly different from our conference schedule,” said Offutt, who is 220-102-35, and counting, in his 19th head coaching season overall. “I think we’ll be fairly strong. We’d like to get back to the regional or semistate and see what happens.”
